Matta Commits to Western Michigan University

SALMON ARM, BC: The Salmon Arm Silverbacks are pleased to announce that 2002 born defenceman Lucas Matta has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Western Michigan University.

Matta is currently enjoying a breakout year offensively for the Silverbacks. He is top five in team scoring and has found the back of the net six times already from the backend.

Matta spoke about his decision to commit to the Broncos.

“The coaching staff at WMU is outstanding and will give me the tools I need to achieve my goal of playing pro hockey at the highest level. They truly care about their players and know how to build winning teams as well,” said Matta.

He has seen an increased role defensively this season for the Backs due to injuries on the left side of the defence. Matta has 14 points this season and has played all 19 games.

He added that getting a chance to play in one of the top NCAA Conferences was a reason for the commitment.

“I believe the style of game Western Michigan plays will suit my playstyle, as well as playing in a conference like the NCHC will allow me to play the top teams in college hockey every night,” added Matta.

Head Coach Tyler Shattock talked about Matt’s recent decision.

“We’re happy for the whole Matta family as this commitment comes close to home where they should be able to watch a lot of games. Matta has put a ton of work into his game the past year and a half. He’s become a very good all-around defenceman for us, and we look forward to his continued development with Western Michigan and us.

Matta is in his second season with the Silverbacks and is looking to continue to develop as a defenceman.

“Salmon Arm has and will continue to be huge for my development in preparation for college hockey and beyond. The coaching staff here is committed to helping you get better, and with that, I know I will be ready to take that next step,” said Matta.
