Matthew Tovell commits to York University

Salmon Arm, BC – The Silverbacks are pleased to announce that G Matthew Tovell (02′) has committed to York University. The 21-year-old from Belleville, Ontario is currently in his final season of Junior Hockey, and his first as a Silverback.

The netminder has impressed in Salmon Arm since being acquired via trade from the Hawkesbury Hawks back in August. In 38 games played this season, Tovell has went 20-14-3-0 while boasting a 2.54 GAA and .924 save percentage. He has also recorded four shutouts on the season.

“We are very happy for Matt to achieve this accomplishment.” Said Silverbacks General Manager, Brooks Christensen. “Since the day Matt arrived to our program he has made an immediate impact contributing to our teams success. We have no doubt that he will continue to grow on and off the ice as an individual with the Lions next season.”

Tovell earned a spot at the 2023 BCHL All-Star game in Penticton for his play in the first half of the season. He has continued to grow in the second half, and is currently in the top five of every goaltending category (GAA, Save Percentage, Shutouts, Minutes Played and Wins)

“I am very excited to play for York University, and continue my education” said Tovell. “After many conversations with my family, agent, and coaches, I feel it is the right place for me and I couldn’t be happier.”

Join us in congratulating Matthew on his commitment to York University!
