Backs Fall 6-0 on Road in Penticton

PENTICTON, BC: The Penticton Vees scored four second period goals as they went on to defeat the Salmon Arm Silverbacks 6-0 at home.

In the first period, the Silverbacks nearly opened the scoring in the first couple minutes of the game as Simon Tassy skated down the left wing and took the puck to the front of the net, but Vees goaltender Carter Serhyenko denied him. After that, the Silverbacks didn’t muster much offence the rest of the period, as they generated just two more shots the rest of the way. The Vees opened the scoring nine minutes into the first period on a wrap-around goal as he beat Owen Say to the right post for his 18th of the season. The Vees got a powerplay late in the period when Tassy was called for high sticking. The Vees had four shots on the powerplay but failed to solve Say. The Vees outshot the Silverbacks 17-3 in the opening twenty minutes.

In the middle frame, the Vees added four goals on 13 shots. First, it was Luc Wilson skating the puck into the offensive zone, and beating Say short side for a 2-0 lead. The Vees added another two minutes later on a pretty passing play by the Nadeau brothers. Bradley fed a quick pass across to Josh, who beat an outstretched Say for a 3-0 lead. The Silverbacks got their first powerplay of the evening shortly after, as defenceman Owen Simpson got the gate for hooking. However, the Silverbacks could not capitalize. The Vees added to their lead just past the midway point of the period as defenceman Grayson Arnott beat Say glove side for his 6th of the season. Moments later, rookie forward Mathieu Cobetto-Roy got a high sticking penalty, putting the Vees on their third powerplay. Aydar Suniev made a move past Jake Lammens and backhanded it past Say to make it 5-0 Vees.

In the third period, Liam Vanderkooi was in goal for the Silverbacks, ending Owen Says’ night as he allowed five goals on 28 shots. Unfortunately, it was just one of those nights for the Silverbacks, as they could not generate much offence most of the night. The Vees added a late goal as Spencer Smith shot it off Kieran Ruscheinski and in past Vanderkooi to make it 6-0. The Silverbacks fall in regulation for the first time on the road bringing their record to 19-1-4 on the season. The Backs will look to bounce back this weekend with a pair of games vs Trail and Wenatchee.
