Smoke Eaters squeeze by the Silverbacks

Trail, BC – The Silverbacks made a trip into Trail to take on the Smoke Eaters for the first time this season. Cominco Arena played host to game one of four on the season between the two squads. The teams both started off the season with identical 3-3-0-0 records. Matthew Tovell (3-2-0-0 – .927 Save % – 2.71 GAA) got his sixth start of the season for the ‘Backs. While on the other side of ice it was Cole Tisdale (1-2-0-0 – .847 Save % – 6.74 GAA) getting the nod for the Smoke Eaters.

It was an intense start between the two teams as both teams came flying out of the gates. After the intense start, the Silverbacks went to the power play and were able to capitalize. It was Owen Beckner (4) continuing his strong play when he opened the scoring midway through the first frame. Late in the first period the Smoke Eaters were able to things up when Nick Remissong (5) scored with just one second to go. The Siverbacks outshot the Smoke Eaters 15-12 in the first frame.

The second period continued with the high intensity as both teams looked to put their marks on the game. Neither team went to the man advantage in the period, as the lone penalties gave some four-on-four play. The Smoke Eaters added two goals late in the frame as Adam Parsons (4), and Judah Makway (2) scored to take a two goal lead into the final frame. Trail outshot the ‘Backs 11-6 in the second period.

Trail continued to apply the pressure in the third period as they were controlling the play throughout the period. Late in the frame, Salmon Arm was able to add two more power play markers. It was Ethan Ullrick (2) getting it going as he scored a great individual goal to pull the ‘Backs within one. Just a few moments later, Owen Beckner (5) got his second of the night to tie things up. It remained deadlocked for just a few moments, until Nick Remmissong (6) found a way to get one by Tovell. The late goal proved to be the winner, as the Smoke Eaters took down the Silverbacks by a score of 4-3.

The Silverbacks return home to the Shaw Centre tomorrow night as the Prince George Spruce Kings will come to town for a 6:00PM puck drop.
