Game Preview: Backs Go For Sweep in Trail

Salmon Arm, B.C. — The Salmon Arm Silverbacks improved their record to a 2-0-0 last night thanks to a big 4-2 win over the Trail Smoke Eaters.

Tonight, they play the rematch and will be looking for the same result.

3 Storylines

1) Chemistry of Rybarik-Bennett-Wakeford

This trio was outstanding last night, with Rybarik and Wakeford each recording a goal and an assist. That included connecting on a huge goal with just over six minutes remaining in the third period — a goal that held up as the game-winner. Bennett was solid too, even though he didn’t find the scoresheet.

Rybarik currently leads the Silverbacks with four points in his first two games.

2) Can Power Play Score For Third Consecutive Game?

The Backs power play has had limited opportunities thus far, but has converted in each of the first two games, going 2 for-7 in total. That 28.6 per cent clip ranks sixth of the 17 teams in the league right now.

On Friday, the Silverbacks were only on the man advantage twice all night. If they can replicate the same level of puck movement they had on Friday and perhaps get a few more opportunities, they could very well make it three straight games with a power play goal to start the season.

3) Lineup Changes?

With the second game of a back-to-back, there are usually minor adjustments made from both sides, which will be something to watch. Who will start in goal for each side? Will the line combos change? It will be interesting to see what changes Trail makes in particular, as they will surely not want to start their season 0-4.

Players to Watch

SILVERBACKS: COALSON WOLFORD

The rookie from San Jose, Cali. scored in the preseason on his first shift and has fit right in so far in the regular season as the third line centre. Last night, he played between Simon Tassy and Trevor Adams, and although they weren’t the team’s best line, they did generate a few solid chances. Wolford’s puck protection skills, shot and hockey IQ make him one to monitor as the season goes on, as he is bound to keep improving.

SMOKE EATERS: KENT JOHNSON

Johnson had a good second half of Friday’s game, showing off his speed and puck skills.

The 16-year-old is coming off a 46-point rookie campaign for Trail last season and has already secured an NCAA scholarship to the University of Michigan. He has been held pointless so far this season but that probably won’t last long.
