Vernon, B.C. — The Vernon Vipers used a four-goal third period to come from behind and beat the Salmon Arm Silverbacks 7-5 on Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

The Backs record is now 6-4-3 , while the Vipers improve to 8-3-2.

GAME SUMMARY

The Silverbacks had another strong start in this one, out-shooting the Vipers 18-7 in the first period.

They also got out to a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes, thanks to back-to-back 5-on-5 goals from their top line.

First, Simon Tassy banked one off of goaltender Roan Clarke from below the goal line to make it 1-0.

Under three minutes later, Tassy came flying down the right wing on an odd-man rush and fired a shot that was stopped, but Sullivan Mack happened to be charging the net and put home the rebound.

The Vipers responded with two goals 1:23 apart to even the score, but before the period was done, Salmon Arm re-took the lead.

With exactly six minutes to go in the period, it was Tassy who gave the Backs the go-ahead goal again, this time after one-timing a cross-ice pass from Noah Seradchny on the power play.

Early in the second period, the Vipers tied the game again, this time on a point shot from Seth Bafaro.

Yet again, the Silverbacks responded, with Drew Bennett making it 4-3 just past the halfway mark of the period.

The Vipers scored three consecutive goals in the third period to take a 6-4 lead with just under five minutes to go.

First it was Reagan Milburn seven minutes in to tie the game 4-4, then Jo-Jo Tanaka-Campbell tipped a point shot from Sam Duerr to make it 5-4 and the Nicholas Remissong made it 6-4 with 4:24 to go in the game.

Lucas Matta responded for the Silverbacks just 30 seconds later to get Salmon Arm within a goal.

The Silverbacks couldn’t get any sustained offensive zone time when they pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker and the Vipers added an empty netter with 10.8 second remaining to make it a 7-5 final.

THEY SAID IT

“It’s a tough one to lose, but it’s one that only becomes disappointing or tough if we let it creep into future games. So if we can just get back on track tomorrow and play a similar way that we played today, I think we’ll get a better result. It’s not one that we’re going to dwell on too much.” – Assistant coach Carter Cochrane
