Silverbacks Win 4-2 in Trail to split weekend

The Silverbacks traveled to Trail on Saturday for their first of seven regular season, Interior Division meetings with the Smoke Eaters. Both teams were looking to split the weekend after losing their home openers on Friday night, and the Silverbacks opened the scoring for the second time in their first four games as Taro Hirose and Nick Hutchison connected at 17:38 giving the visitors a one-nothing lead. The Backs lead one-nothing into the middle period, out-shooting the Smoke Eaters 12-7 in the first frame.

Shane Danyluk opened the scoring 2:50 into the second period, with his first goal of the season from Carson Bolduc and Bryden Marsh to put the visitors ahead two-nothing. But Trail got on the board on the power play, with Jack Berezan off for hooking and the Smoke Eaters cut the lead in half at 12:48. And just under three minutes later Trail tied the game at two. Nick Hutchison restored the Silverbacks lead and potted the eventual game winner, his second of the season at 16:12 of the second period, from Bolduc and Karl El-Mir. The Backs lead 3-2 after 40 minutes in Trail but the home team out-shot the visitors 13-11 in the middle period.

The only goal of the final period came from Taro Hirose, his second of the game and third of the season giving the Silverbacks a 4-2 lead at 17:15 with Colton Thibault and Phil Middleton assisting on the insurance marker.

The Backs out-shot the Smoke Eaters 9-5 in the third period, and 32-25 overall. Angus Redmond earned his second win of the season as he stopped 23 shots. The Silverbacks power play finished 0-for-2, while the penalty-kill was 2-for-3.

The Backs improve to 3-1 on the season and will now prepare for a weekend home-and-home series with the Penticton Vees beginning Friday, October 3rd in Penticton at 7p.m., and at home to the Vees on Saturday, the 4th at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm at 7p.m. The Vees are also 3-1 after splitting their weekend games.
