Silverbacks Week 2 Action

The Silverbacks are into week 2 of this 2016-17 BCHL pre-season at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm.

The ‘Backs will conclude their pre-season schedule this weekend, with a home-and-home set with the Vernon Vipers. The Silverbacks will host the Vipers on Friday, September 2nd at 7pm at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm.

The ‘Backs dropped a 4-3 decision this past Saturday at home to the West Kelowna Warriors. The Silverbacks fell 2-1 to the Warriors in West Kelowna on Friday night. Salmon Arm opened its 5 game pre-season schedule last Wednesday, August 24th with a 5-5 tie on the road with the Merritt Centennials.

The Warriors opened the scoring on Saturday night, as 18-year-old Chase Dubois got the visitors on the board at 13:06 of the first period. West Kelowna took that 1-0 lead into the second period. The Silverbacks outshot the Warriors 12-7.

West Kelowna scored a pair of goals in the middle period, exactly two minutes apart as 18-year-old Matt Monk found the back of the net at 4:26 and 16-year-old Byron Moradshadi potted the 3-0 marker at 6:26.

The ‘Backs outshot West Kelowna 13-9, and lead 25-16 after 40 minutes.

Second season Silverback forward, 19-year-old Jared Turcotte got the home team on the board just 1:08 into the third.

And rookie forward Justin Wilson cut the Warriors lead to 3-2 at 5:49.

West Kelowna took its second two goal lead of the game at 8:24 of the third, a power-play goal with Turcotte penalized for checking from behind as well as a game misconduct. 18-year-old Mitch Martan had the Warriors goal on the man-advantage and the visitors lead 4-2.

But, the ‘Backs got back within 1 in the final 5 minutes of the third as second season Silverback defenceman Cameron Trott fired home his first of the pre-season at 15:41.

The Silverbacks outshot the Warriors 12-10 in the third and 37-26 Silverbacks total.

Michael Botiz started and finished Saturday’s game in goal for the ‘Backs. The 18-year-old of Oakville, Ontario allowed 4 goals on 26 shots in his first pre-season start.

The Silverbacks power-play finished 0-for-4 on Saturday, while the penalty-kill was 0-for-1. The Silverbacks dressed 11 forwards, 7 defencemen and 2 goaltenders at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm.

Silverbacks returnees saw their first action of the pre-season on Saturday. Carson Bolduc, Josh Blanchard, Mitch Skapski, Jared Turcotte, Ryley Booth, Elijiah Barriga, Cameron Trott along with first season Silverback Carter Cochrane of Kamloops, BC.

Returning forward Marcus Mitchell watched Saturday’s game at the Shaw Centre, as well as forward Connor Sundquist and rookie defencemen Spencer Hora and Julian Timba. Training Camp opened last Monday, August 22nd with 41 players registered.
