Bulldogs snap the Silverbacks seven game home win streak

Salmon Arm, BC – The Alberni Valley Bulldogs took down the Salmon Arm Silverbacks 5-2 led by a hat-trick by Dakota Macintosh.

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks (11-6-0-1) welcomed the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (7-9-1-1) to town for the first and only time this season. The two teams haven’t met since January 10th, 2020. Both teams are coming off Wednesday night losses, as the ‘Backs fell 3-1 to the Wenatchee Wild, while the Bulldogs are coming off a 5-2 loss to the hands of the Prince George Spruce Kings.

It was Matthew Tovell (8-5-0-1, 2.64 GAA, .924 S%) getting his 14th start of the season for the Silverbacks. While on the other side of the ice it was Hobie Hedquist (5-6-0-0, 3.45 GAA, .890 S%) getting the nod for the Bulldogs.

Both teams were looking to rebound following their mid-week losses. It showed early as both teams came out of the gates flying, and it  resulted in a couple early penalties on either side. Midway through the opening frame it was the Bulldogs All-Star, Ethan Bono (10) opening the scoring on an impressive individual effort to beat Matthew Tovell. Just a few moments later it was Will Elger (4) getting on the board during the Bulldogs second man advantage of the game. Late in the period it was Lynden Hanvold, and David Sacco dropping their gloves right in front of the Bulldogs bench. Sacco went off for a four minute spearing call which triggered the fight. The Silverbacks went to work on a four minute powerplay late in the period, but were not able to capitalize. Shots in the opening frame were 13-10 in favor of the Bulldogs.

The middle frame opened up with carry over powerplay time for the Silverbacks as David Sacco continued to serve his double minor. It was Hedquist standing tall for the Bulldogs as he slowed down the ‘Backs pressure to open the frame. It was another penalty filled period between the two teams as both teams went to the man advantage on multiple occasions. It was once again the Bulldogs capitalizing on their opportunities as Dakota Macintosh (1,2) was able to beat Matthew Tovell twice on the man advantage to extend the Bulldogs lead to four goals. The shots in the middle frame were 13-13.

The Silverbacks came to the ice led by a different goalie as Carter Richardson came in replace of Matthew Tovell. It was the best period of the night for the Silverbacks as they came out of the gate flying looking to get on the board. Aidan Lindblad (2) opened up the scoring for the Silverbacks early in the period to pull the Silverbacks within three. Brandon Santa Juana (7) got another powerplay marker for the ‘Backs to get them within striking distance. That was as close as they were able to get as the Bulldogs added an empty netter. Dakota Macintosh (3) completed the hat-trick for the Bulldogs to put the final touches on the Bulldogs win over Salmon Arm. The Bulldogs ended up taking the Silverbacks 5-2.

Next up for the Silverbacks will be a midweek clash in Penticton. The ‘Backs will travel into Penticton to take on the Vees on Wednesday night. Puck drop will be at 6:30PM.
