Backs lose 5-1 in Vees Home Opener

The Silverbacks and Penticton Vees met for the first time this season on Friday night in Penticton, in game one of the back-to-back, home-and-home set.

The visitors opened the scoring shorthanded in the opening period, as Nick Hutchison capitalized on a mistake by Vees starting goalie Hunter Miska who misplayed the puck on the Vees first power-play of the game. Hutchison grabbed the loose puck from behind the Penticton goal, skated out in front and found the back of the net at 7:58. Hutchison's 3rd goal of the season, unassisted. The Vees tied the score at one going into the second period, a power-play marker with Hutchison off for hooking. The Silverbacks outshot the Vees 10-6 in the first period.

The only goal of the middle frame gave the home team it's first lead of the game, 2-1 Vees into the third period as Penticton outshot Salmon Arm 13-6 in the second stanza.

The Vees added three more goals in the third, including opening the scoring 32 seconds into the period as Penticton opened the season series with a 5-1 win at home over the Silverbacks. The Vees outshot the Backs 13-10 in the third, and 32-26 overall. Angus Redmond made 27 saves for the Silverbacks, while Hunter Miska turned aside 25 shots for the Vees.

The Silverbacks power-play was 0-for-1, while the penalty-kill finished two-for-four. Steen Cooper, and Josh Laframboise each had a goal and two assists for the Vees.

The two teams will meet again tonight (Saturday), October 4th at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm at 7p.m.
