SURREY, B.C. OCTOBER 28th, 2017
The Silverbacks (8-7-0-2) and Cowichan Valley Capitals (1-12-0-2) will meet tonight (Saturday) at 7pm on Vancouver Island, less than 24 hours after Salmon Arm lost 4-3 in overtime at the Surrey Eagles (7-8-1-1).
Trey Thomas opened the scoring on Friday night with his third of the season at 10:44 of the first period and on the power-play. The Silverbacks lead 1-0 into the second and outshot the Eagles 13-10 in the first.
Marcus Mitchell’s seventh gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at 3:49 of period two. Surrey responded at 5:10, but Noah Wakeford’s third restored the two goal advantage at 7:30. The Eagles got back within one at 8:42, but the Silverbacks lead 3-2 into the third. Surrey outshot Salmon Arm 13-8 in the second period, 23-21 Eagles overall.
Josh Latta began the third with a slashing penalty at 3:49, and the home team tied the score 3-3 at 5:32 on the power-play. Austin Chorney was called for hooking at 9:20 and Demetri Kambeitz for holding at 15:37, as the Silverbacks took each of the three penalties in the third. Surrey lead 14-10 on the shot clock and 37-31 Eagles after regulation.
The home team potted the winner at 3:10 of 4-on-4 overtime. Surrey outshot the Silverbacks 2-0 in OT, 39-31 Eagles total. Kyle Dumba made 35 saves in his first start in the BCHL. The 19-year-old goaltender was acquired by the Silverbacks earlier this week in exchange for future considerations from the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the AJHL. In 2013 the Calgary Hitmen drafted Dumba with the 68th overall pick in the WHL bantam draft. The following year he was named the top midget goalie in the CSSHL while playing for the Edge School for Athletes in Calgary. Nic Tallarico made 28 saves in his first meeting versus his former team after being acquired by the Eagles earlier this month.
Each team now has an OT victory in the three game season series, after the Silverbacks won 3-2 in 4-on-4 overtime at the Bauer BCHL Showcase. The Silverbacks will host Surrey on Saturday, January 27th at 7pm at the Shaw Centre.
Salmon Arm finished 1-for-3 on the power-play and 4-for-5 on the penalty-kill on Friday. The Silverbacks still lead the BCHL at 27-percent with the man-advantage and with the highest number of power-play goals at 25, but Salmon Arm has given up the most amount of short-handed goals-against with six. Cowichan Valley’s PP is seventh at 19-percent, with 13 power-play goals and three short-handed goals-against. The Silverbacks penalty-kill is at 76-percent without a short-handed marker, as well as 22 power-play goals-against which is the third highest total in the league. The Capitals PK is at 74-percent without a short-handed goal as well, and the second most amount of power-play goals-against with 23. Salmon Arm has 238 penalty-minutes which is the seventh most in the league, while Cowichan Valley has the third highest total at 265.
The Silverbacks beat Cowichan Valley 3-2 on Wednesday, September 20th at the Bauer BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack. And the Capitals are coming off of a 7-2 loss at the Langley Rivermen (8-3-0-6) last Sunday, October 22nd.
Salmon Arm is now 3-1-0-1 versus the Mainland Division, 2-3-0-1 on the road, 5-2-0-2 in October and 2-0-0-0 versus the Island. Cowichan Valley is 0-6-0-1 in the Interior, 1-2-0-2 on home ice and 0-6-0-2 in October.
The Silverbacks have been outscored 68-59 and 27-23 on the road. The Capitals have been outscored 75-34 and 26-19 at home. Cowichan Valley is 17th in goals scored and 17th in goals-against in the 17 team BCHL.
Salmon Arm’s road trip will conclude tomorrow (Sunday) at the Victoria Grizzles (10-6-0-1) at 2pm. The Silverbacks next home action will be on Sunday, November 5th versus the Powell River Kings (10-3-1-1) at 3pm.
